Department of Zoology

About the Department

The Department of Zoology was established in 1973 with a Pre university course. The UG course in Zoology under aided stream was started in 1976 and upgraded to the Research Department in the year 2013.  The PG Course in Zoology was started in 2016. The integrative focus of the department reflects the importance of strong disciplinary approaches in teaching and research to the student community. The Department also strives for Excellence and synergy in coordinated programmes, teaching and service. The Department of Zoology also offers certificate courses in Clinical Laboratory Technology, Sericulture and Yoga for youth empowerment

INFRASTRUCTURE AND EQUIPMENTS IN THE LABORATORY  

Well equipped lab facilities are available for the students to carry out their practical and theory classes.

Library books are constantly used by the students for their references, to do their assignments and seminars.

To magnify the objects.

To boil the biological samples.

To isolate specific samples from crude samples based on their mass weight.

Compound microscope
For magnification of Spotters of the slides.

Over Head Projector
Used for presentation of objects while teaching.

Stage Micrometer
To measure the size of microscopic objects.

Ocular Micrometer
To measure the size of microscopic objects.

Specimen Preservator
To Preserve Specimens.

Gas Stove
To heat water for practicals

For magnification of images in three dimensions

Sphygmomanometer
To find out the blood pressure.

Haemoglobinometer
To estimate the Haemoglobin content

Autoclave
To sterilize laboratory equipments & biological samples under high pressure.

Hot Air Oven
To sterilize laboratory equipments through high temperature.

Digital BP Apparatus
To find the blood pressure through digital monitor.
23.
Spectrophotometer
To find out the presence of compounds from the extracts.
24.
Agarose Gel Electrophoresis
To separate the compounds based on molecular weight of the molecule in an electric field.
25.
Thin layer paper and column chromatography
To separate the proteins and used for the quantitative estimation of aminoacids.
26.
Blotting Technique- Southern, Western blotting
To detect mRNA, DNA and proteins from samples.
27.
Deioniser with reverse osmosis
To test the salt content of samples.
28.
PCR Machine
To amplify DNA fragments isolated from organisms and propagate DNA for gene manipulation.
29.
Column Chromatography
To separate and purify enzymes.
